Installing 2 3/8” Backset Latches
In the Residential lockset business, most manufacturers provide a dual-backset latch which fits in standard door-preparations. Depending on the brand, there are various methods of adjusting the latch to configure it to a 2 3/8” or 2 ¾” backset. Once this is done, the latch is then secured in the latch-bore prep.
Occasionally, difficulties can occur when installing a dual-backset latch into a 2 3/8” backset door preparation, especially when the face-bore prep is 1 ½” diameter as in a deadbolt installation. It might appear that the latch is “too long” to fit in the door. The back of the latch will be jammed against the far edge of the face-bore, and will likely not be properly centered. When operating the lock, a portion of the latch may catch part of the bore hole, causing it to jam.
The solution is to take the latch-bore prep slightly beyond the far edge of the face-bore, using a 1” spade bit on your drill. Check to see that the latch is not contacting any part of the door prep when it is operated.
