Key Cylinder Lubricants
One will often find the tips of their fingers a shiny silver colour after rekeying a SCHLAGE lock. This substance is powdered graphite and is the ideal lubricant for a precision key cylinder. The powder continues to break down into smaller and smaller pieces the more usage it sees. Unlike other lubricants such as WD-40. graphite leaves no sticky residue that eventually attracts dirt….the true enemy of a precision key cylinder.
Simply place a small amount on the teeth of the key and insert into the key cylinder. Work the key back and forth a few times until the key slides in and out easily.
Occasionally, a little too much graphite enters the key cylinder in the manufacturing process. It will spill out of the cylinder onto the outside of the knob, lever or deadbolt and may “stain“ the finish. This can be easily cleaned off with a little WD-40 and a soft cloth.
