Re-sizing a Deadbolt Door Preparation

Like many of the new electronic locksets in the marketplace, Schlage’s Residential Electronics Keypad Deadbolts require a 2 1/8” door prep.  This is not a problem for many new doors which come already bored to accept door hardware this size.  In a retro-fit application however, the consumer might find that they have a 1 1/2" diameter door prep, and will be faced with “re-sizing” the existing hole.

This adds a layer of complexity to the installation, but is within the skill set of most people comfortable using a full-sized electric drill.  A jig will be required to centre a hole saw over the existing hole.  These are available at most hardware stores for about $20 to $25, and include the 2 1/8” hole saw.  Be sure to purchase the bi-metal type if using on a steel door.  There is another more “serious” kit available for about $50, which would be ideal for installers.

Once the old deadbolt hardware is off of the door, and you have assembled your supplies, a typical re-sizing would go like this:
