Double Cylinder Deadbolts
A double cylinder deadbolt is one that operates with a key from both sides (interior and exterior). Thus, to lock or unlock the unit from the inside, you must use the key. These types of deadbolts are not recommended by Fire Departments or Insurance companies, due to the risk of having the inhabitants “locked-in” during an emergency. While they are not technically “illegal” to sell, their use may be regulated by Residential and Commercial Building Codes in your municipality.
Schlage recommends double cylinder deadbolts not be installed on any door that would be used to exit the home in case of Emergency. That being said, there are applications where such a deadbolt might be useful.
1. Side door with a window leading into a garage, where the glass could be easily broken and opened by reaching in.
2. Side door with a window leading into a laundry room, as above.
3. Door with a window leading into a back-yard storage shed, as above.
4. Door leading to a back-yard swimming pool/ hot-tub , where young children are in the home.
Schlage manufactures a full range of double cylinder deadbolts in all of the popular finishes. Please carefully consider all of the safety implications, Building Codes and options before installing one of these units.
